Seven weeks, four days
I’ve been remiss in writing to this blog, and I apologize. It isn’t that there’s been nothing new to report, there has, and lots of it! I’ve just been busy; too busy even for Ravelry, too busy to keep up with The Yarn Harlot and Dooce on a regular basis, too busy to catch up on my email. So please, don’t feel neglected!
What’s been taking up all of my available time? These two, born June 7, 2008:
Welcome to our little family, Yevgeny Mungojerrie aka Mojo or Zhenyka (one pound, 3.5 ounces as of today), and Ivan Rumpelteazer aka Teazyka (pronounced “teeska,” one pound, 3.8 ounces). We went all the way out to Long Island City in Queens to get them. We had only planned on taking one, but when we got to our friend M’s house and I picked up Teazyka, G picked up several of the others, and Mojo fell asleep in his arms. The conversation went like this:
G: (with puppy dog eyes) Can we keep him?
Me: Are you sure?
G: Yes.
Me: Are you really sure?
G: Ask me again, and I’ll say no.
Me: M, I think we’re taking two.
M: Yay!!!1!!
They had adopted out nearly all of the eight, and our guy was close to last, if not the last. Our amazing vet (who makes housecalls) has already been to see them, and exclaimed, “Oh my god! They’re so intense! They’re so tiny!” Which leads us to believe that they were indeed premature. Also, there were eight kittens total in the litter (all of whom survived). G has taken some more pictures, the first of which are posted over at Cats, Sheep, & Penguins, along with the whole story. He’s shot and processed more pictures; they’ll be up soon.
Guess what’s coming home with us tonight?
Pictures can be found here. Talk about cute overload; I’m going to be especially antsy at work today (I wangled a 10:30 - 3pm shift).
digging the sunlight
Since Pye was sunning herself in this cold winter light in the primo spot next to the window, and my office chair was turned facing away from said window, Harry chose the next available spot. Yeah, I gotta clean up my desk.

Fiber for a cause
All right everyone! Get out your needles and hooks and that spare acrylic or cotton yarn and start creating some six inch squares! They’re for a very good cause, “they will be sewn together into small blankets and donated to The Animal Orphanage and the Bangor Humane Society to serve as bedding for cats,” says Ardeana Hamlin of the Bangor Daily News. You can win a book for your endeavor, one of the On the Go series of books — “Cables” if you are knitter, or “Felted Crochet” if you are a crocheter. Here’s the link to the website with the whole story. As I sit typing this, there is a very large Maine Coon cat sitting on my lap (it is very hard to type around a Tigger), nudging me to write the most enticing words possible to lure you into helping his fellow felines. So I tell you what, when you’ve sent in your square(s), post a comment to this blog, and I’ll put everyone’s name into a hat and the winner will receive:
One ounce of Abby Franquemont’s 80/20 wool/mohair blend roving in the Country Stream colorway! Oh wait, what if you don’t spin? Okay, here’s something else for the non-spinner:
Four ounces of Fingerlakes Soft Wool in a dark blue! When you post your comment, please tell me if you are a spinner or non. This is all on the honor system, and the more squares you create, the more entries you get. Plus, you get the satisfaction of knowing that some very sad kitties will be made happier by your act of kindness.
Send your squares to: By Hand, Bangor Daily News, PO Box 1329, Bangor ME 04402 by Tuesday, February 26.
I thank you, and the pussycats thank you.
Knit (or crochet) on!
Happiness is a full log hoop
It’s from Plow & Hearth, and was the nicest one we found. We even attached some pine boughs like they have in their picture. It holds about seven hods full, which is about three or so days’ worth of fires:
Also more détante among the furry ones:
Next on the list: call the cat-sitter!
Of kittycats and Christmas trees
What’s a knitting and spinning blog without any knitting? No good, I tell you, no good. Here is Harry glaring at Sock One of a pair for my father (due Sunday night — gadzooks!). To be fair, I spent the last three days in bed, sick, except for the interview, which went swimmingly (At one point she said, “We’re interviewing other people, but I love you!”). News on that front will be at the earliest, Friday, at the latest, Tuesday. Anyway, about the sock, it’s Colinette’s Jitterbug in Blue Parrot, knit on size 3 Addis, my own toe-up recipe. I’d started knitting these for myself about three months ago, but they were too big. I kept knitting, not really willing to admit my gauge error knowing I’d find someone they’d fit. After losing my job, my father said, “No presents for us! Knit me something instead, I know, socks! Can you do socks?” Can I do socks? You betcha! My very favorite thing to knit, in fact. I don’t know why, but there is something magical about turning that heel, every time.
We ventured out today to get Christmas trees. There is a lot down on Route 6 that benefits the Delancey Street Foundation, a noble, charitable cause. From their website: “We’re considered the country’s leading residential self-help organization for substance abusers, ex-convicts, homeless and others who have hit bottom.” All the proceeds from the sale of the trees go to the Foundation. G got our trees there last year, and while they were a bit more expensive this year (he got last year’s trees on December 23d for $10 each), the knowledge that the money is going to a worthy cause it heartwarming indeed. Here are pictures of Penelope and Pablo captive on the car, and Penelope, naked, inside (Pablo lives on the porch, pictures of him will come). They are eight and six feet, respectively, are Balsam Firs, and lived in Quebec before living in our humble abode. Welcome to our new additions!
